I've never trained in martial arts before. Is previous experience required?
No we run a specific beginners course to teach the basic concepts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The instruction also caters for different skill levels, body types and fitness levels so that students can progress in a safe and fun environment. Before starting any physical exercise program you should consult your doctor for a health check-up.

Why is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so effective?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a constantly evolving system based around techniques that are tested against non-compliant opponents. It allows smaller framed people to overcome larger and stronger adversaries using correct technique and sound body mechanics. Even the military picked up on this and the US designed their core combative program around Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The art involves more joint manipulation and body control as opposed to kick boxing techniques. However, the importance of striking cannot be overlooked and at our school a system of cross training is used in the self-defense syllabus.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a sport or a self-defense system?
Both. The sporting aspect has helped develop the system and test it over many years in a safe environment. Some of these techniques can then be incorporated into the self-defense system giving you simple and effective techniques that work in real situations

How long does it take to become proficient?
To get a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu usually takes about 8 years. Although after one year of training twice a week your skill level will have dramatically improved. This will allow you to defend yourself much more effectively against bigger and stronger opponents.

Do you train with or without a gi(kimono)?
Both. The school starts students off training with a gi. This is because it is easier to make the transition from gi to no gi than vice versa. But in the future no-gi classes will be starting.

What does the first class involve?
First the instructor will explain and answer any questions you have about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, giving a short demonstration of the techniques. After a light warmup we will look at 3 or 4 common situations and effective defenses that can be learnt and applied extremely quickly, as well as some basic principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The first class is very light and allows the teacher to assess the needs of the student.

What are the rules of the club?
